Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.
Gum disease is surprisingly common and is caused by a build-up of plaque, a film of bacteria which forms daily on the surface of teeth and gums. If plaque is not removed by twice-daily brushing and flossing it hardens into calculus which over time can cause inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis. The gums become tender and inflamed, and can start to bleed during brushing.
If left untreated the gums and bone which anchor the teeth can start to erode, this is known as periondontal disease. In more severe cases this can result in deep gum pockets and bone recession, causing teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. There is no specific cure for periodontal disease, but it can be controlled through thorough careful oral care and regular visits to your dentist and hygienist.
At Newport Smile Centre our dentists and hygienists always include a thorough examination of your gums during your routine dental checkups. This means any sign of gum disease can be picked up early and with the expert care of our dental hygienists and maintaining good dental hygiene at home it will not go on to cause any long-term problems.
